Matthew Hovis
Matthew Hovis won first and second place at the 2009 VDFF with Oil in the Family and The Dog Hollow Event respectively.
His previous wins include Iron Furnances of Venango County. Hovis is from Kennerdell, PA.
~Why do you make films? I like to tell stories and think film is the ultimate way to tell stories.
~Who/what inspired you to make film? Growing up with a video camera in the house gave me the opportunity to discover my
interest in film making at an early age.
~What do you like most about making films? I enjoy the limitless possibilities of expression that film making offers.
~What do you dislike most about making films? The time it takes to pull it all together.
~Whose work do you watch frequently and why? I like to watch the work of John Carpenter, James Cameron, and Stephen Spielberg.

~What is the most significant contribution made by short independent films to cinema and society? I think independent film makers
are able to explore things that might be overlooked by the movie industry.
~What is your next project? I have a documentary and a science-fiction that I am currently working on.
~If there is one film by you that you would want people to watch which would it be? My next film.
~If you could save one film for yourself while all films in the world were being destroyed which would it be? Films I've taken of my kids.
~If you had to choose one film to send out into space for possible communication with other worlds/beings which would it be?

Comment: I think VDFF is the highlight of the year in this area. I hope that it continues to grow and draw more interest each year.
